ITMA - It's That Man Again
ITMA ran from 1939 to 1949, ending due to Tommy Handley's sudden death from a brain haemorrhage. The It's That Man Again of the title was the phrase used in the newspapers to refer to Hitler but became synonymous with Handley whose ITMA character was variously in charge of a pirate radio station, the Minister for Aggravation and Mysteries, the Mayor of Foaming At The Mouth, head of a war factory, hotel and spa.
Though it was very much Handley's show, ITMA also featured many great supporting players, including Maurice Denham, Molly Weir, Dorothy Summers and Hattie Jacques. Catchphrases abound but Summer's Mrs Mopp saying “Can I do you now, Sir?” and Colonel Chinstrap's “Don't mind if I do” are perhaps best remembered. The show itself came to represent British pluck in the face of the losses and shortages of the war.
