Round The Horne

Round The Horne

After the success of Beyond Our Ken, the same team came together with Barry Took and Marty Feldman (he of the bug-eyed stare) in Round The Horne.

The show featured regular characters and regular sketch styles to produce a format that was hugely successful and remains effective today (hence the success of Round The Horne -- Revisited on stage).

The true genius of Round The Horne -- and what makes it so amazing that it got past the BBC censors -- is the use of outrageous double-entendre; what is said is actually almost entirely meaningless but the delivery of performers like Kenneth Horne, Kenneth Williams, Hugh Paddick and “the swarthy, tattooed” Betty Marsden made everything seem both filthy and funny.

Round The Horne's gallery of characters included Julian and Sandy (“how bona to vada your dolly old eek, Mr 'orne”), Ramblin' Sid Rumpo (“hello, me dearios”), Charles and Fiona (“I know you know”, “I know you know I know and, yet, I'm somehow unsure”) and J Peasemould Gruntfuttock (“I heard the voices, I did, and the voices said unto me”).
