Sinusitis

This site is a brief look at Sinusitis and how to cope with sinus problems. It has a particular emphasis on natural and alternative treatments.

I suffer from severe sinus problems and have been reading quite a bit -- particularly the excellent The Sinus Cure (US) -- so I decided to create this site to bring together the information that I've found.

What Is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is the inflammation of certain facial cavities. These areas produce mucus that should drain through the nose. If the cavities become blocked, clogged up with mucus, infection and pain result.

Areas Of Sinusitis

There are three main areas where sinus pain occurs : Frontal, above the nose and eyes (this is the pain that you feel as a headache); Ethmoid, between your eyes, on either side of your nose (this is where you feel the increased pressure at the top of your nose and in your eyes); and the Maxillary, inside each cheekbone, below the eyes (this is where you feel the pressure on your lower face).

Symptoms Of Sinusitis

There are a number of common symptoms of Sinusitis : coughing and the related hoarseness and sore throats; thick mucus in the nose and throat (known as Post-Nasal Drip); severe earache; severe headache; fatigue; fever; difficulty breathing; and more.

Causes Of Sinusitis

There are also a number of possible causes of Sinusitis, requiring different treatments : allergies can trigger severe sinus problems; anatomical issues with the shape of the nose and face; immunodeficiency (a suppressed immune system); emotional stress; Gastroesophaleal Reflux Disease (GERD), this is when stomach acid comes up in to the throat, usually during night.
