Tuning The Ukulele

Ukes are tuned GCEA. That's (as you're holding the Uke) G for the top string, C for the next string down, then E, then A for the bottom string. The strings are actually numbered the other way: the bottom (A) string is the first string up to the top (G) string which is the fourth.

You can tune the Ukulele by ear if you're really good but most people need a little help. There are a few ways to do this.

  • Using pitch pipes.
You can buy pitch pipes specifically for the Uke or you can use digital (MP3) equivalents.

  • Using another instrument.
You can tune to a piano or another (in tune!) Ukulele.

  • Using an electronic tuner.
My preference, these are little devices that tell you what note you're playing. I have a Stagg tuner that I bought on eBay. You can get them from music stores or online. Take a look at these from Amazon UK or Amazon US.

When you've tuned your Ukulele, you're ready to play. Ukes are notorious for the strings getting loose, though, so don't worry if you need to retune in the middle of a marathon practice session!
