Lesson Two - A Red Book

2-redbook-s

Mix crimson and aureoline again to match the red of the book. Paint in the back cover and then add in a little blue for the shadow cast by the ruler. Mix in blue or brown to make a darker red and paint the front cover. Use a dry brush to lift out any lighter areas, such as the edge of the spine closest to the light. Allow the two shades to mix a little to produce a graded effect. Mix red, yellow and blue to add the darker edges of the book. Paint in the ruler in a light brown and the shadows in grey. Add the pages of the book in a mixture of crimson, French blue and yellow ochre. For the lettering on the cover, use broken lines of Prussian blue, crimson and brown. Don't worry about making the marks legible; it's much better that they give the appearance of text without being actual words.
